NILAA'S BANGLES

2023
Written by Brintha Vaikundan
Illustrated by Vidya Lalgudi Jaishankar

This project holds a special place given its proximity to my culture.

The author, a Sri Lankan Tamil, and I, from Tamil Nadu, India, share a cultural background, aiding in crafting authentic visuals with vibrant colours, through memories, research, and photographs to capture Jaffna's true essence, predating the war.

The story unfolds as Nilaa and her grandfather embark on an eventful journey through the streets of Jaffna, Sri Lanka, predating the civil war, to buy bangles during the festive season.

Follow along as these unusual new friends show the readers that kindness, determination, and a little work can make an enormous difference. Be sure to read the "Fun Facts" to learn a little bit about the ocean animals in the story, the "Not so Fun Facts" to learn how plastic pollution is affecting these creatures of the sea and what we can do to help. WIGGLING VOWELS

Interstice, 2023, UAL
Written & Illustrated by Vidya Lalgudi Jaishankar

Vowels

Written as a contribution to the debut issue of the publication "Interstice" by MA Arts & Science, UAL, 2023. It was vastly inspired by reading about a frog species called Atelopus franciscus, also known as the stubfoot toad. They are South American tropical rainforest species that have no external vocal sac and are anatomically deaf. They communicate by producing and responding to low-intensity calls. This was also based on my research on vowel vocalisations as part of my postgraduate program.
